MECCA Brands is a network of boutique beauty stores across Australia and New Zealand. The company was established in 1997 and despite the increased competition, with companies such as Sephora expanding into Australia, the company continues to go from strength to strength.

Why we're impressed

  • MECCA Brands claimed second place in the 2015 BRW Best Places to Work awards (100 or more employees category).

  • With 20 new stores planned for 2016, the company’s rapid growth is sure to mean lots of exciting new challenges.

  • A lot of companies talk about the importance of investing in their employees and ensuring that customers receive the best possible experience, but MECCA actually puts their money where their mouth is and invests 3% of its turnover into staff education.

  • MECCA treats their employees like, you know, real human beings, focusing on a holistic approach to development rather than just the professional aspect. Lunchtime seminars are held for employees, which cover a range of topics such as financial management, mindfulness and business inspiration.

Vinomofo is an online wine retailer that was formed the traditional startup way – in a garage. It’s won a swag of awards, including Online Retailer of the Year at the 2015 Online Retail Industry Awards.

Why we're impressed

  • Vinomofo was the first company to sign up to PetRescue’s Workplace Foster Care Program. What does this mean? They foster rescue dogs at their office until a furever home is found!

  • Around 90% of the people employed were already Vinomofo customers (‘mofos’) – meaning that you’re surrounded by people who actually care about the company and are excited to be a part of it.

  • The company has a flat hierarchy, encouraging people to be themselves by being autonomous, creative and playing to their strengths.

Cotton On Group

Cotton On is one of Australia’s largest retailers. Its stable of brands includes Cotton On, Typo, Rubi and Supré.

Why we're impressed

  • Cotton On has a strong focus on the health aspect of employee wellbeing. Personal trainers, a whole foods café at their Geelong HQ and discounted health insurance are just some of the benefits on offer.

  • They’ve invested $30M into developing their own onsite university in partnership with Deakin University and an additional $1M into creating a three year graduate program that rotates graduates throughout the business, to ensure they get the right talent.
