5 signs that your boss is a psychopath

The relationship you have with your boss can make or break your level of happiness at work. Unfortunately, new research shows that 1 in 5 bosses is a psychopath - the same ratio as prisoners.

So how can you tell whether your boss is in fact a psychopath?

Well, there's an official checklist but not all of them are that easy to check (who wants to know whether their boss is promiscuous?). So here are our top five:

Number 1. They can turn on the charm factor

The problem is that psychopathic traits are synonymous with traits that are well regarded in the workplace. Psychopaths are quintessentially charming, meaning that they're an absolute hit with clients and are great at managing up.

Number 2. They're masters of manipulation, deflection and deception

Does your boss have a favourite scapegoat or three? Psychopaths are great at avoiding accountability and are even greater at whipping out the blamethrower whenever someone tries to hold them accountable for something that went wrong on their watch.

Number 3. They're arrogant

Psychopaths believe that they're superior beings and that the usual rules don't apply to them. This also means that they've probably made it to where they are by being great at negotiating promotions and pay rises.

Number 4. They have a lack of remorse

Do you sometimes think that your boss would be perfectly comfortable with clubbing a baby seal? Their lack of remorse makes them great at difficult tasks such as firing someone. Or throwing someone under the bus to get ahead.

And to round it off...

Number 5. They have an impaired sense of smell

Now this is a weird one and I don't know how accurate it is, but this was mentioned in a 2012 study published by Macquarie University:

"The researchers found that those individuals who scored highly on psychopathic traits were more likely to struggle to both identify smells and tell the difference between smells, even though they knew they were smelling something."

Now maybe you recognise some of these signs in yourself or you scored highly on this test. It's not all bad according to this article about the pros of being a psychopath - even psychopaths benefit from finding a job that's the right fit for them so they can harness their powers for good. And that's exactly what skillfox will help people do!
